I'd ask in the Romania tribe, but it's been dormant for about a month. So if anyone here can help me, I'd be greatly appreciative.
First question is a simple one. In German, instead of having one word for "it," you'd refer to something as "er" or "sie" (he or she) depending on the gender of the noun (die nacht, the night, feminine, would be she). Is the same done in Romanian?
Second one is a little more involved. I'm going to use the verb "vorbi" as an example.
Eu vorbesc, tu vorbeşti, voi vorbiţi. I speak, you (sg) speak, you (pl) speak. Now, Pimsleur's course on Romanian uses an example of one man talking to one woman, but uses the plural form of the verb to ask if the woman speaks English: "vorbiţi engleză?"
Is it just a different conjugation? Is it wrong? Should you ask "vorbeşti engleză"? I ask partly because Pimsleur isn't the only program that uses this conjugation, and it seems awkward to me.

Re: 2 Questions about Romanian
Thu, April 26, 2007 - 3:57 PMFirst question: yes, it's just like in German. Use the masculine or feminine (or neuter, although there's no separate neuter pronoun) pronoun (he, she) where we'd use 'it' in English, depending on the gender of the word you're replacing.
Second question: Romanian is one of many languages to use the second person plural pronoun to indicate both plurality and formality. So it can refer to a singular 'you' to whom you're speaking politely, or to a group. Slavic languages do the same thing-- 'vy' in Russian refers either to you(pl.) or you (formal).
If you were on good, informal terms with the woman in question, you'd refer to her not with voi/dumeavoastra but with tu. -

Re: 2 Questions about Romanian
Thu, April 26, 2007 - 4:04 PMAnd, whoops, my error... the conjugation part is right, but the pronoun part is wrong!
The second person plural verb form IS also used for the second person polite conjugation, but it refers in that case not to 'voi' but to dumneavoastra.
My brain failure... it's been more than a decade since I had a Romanian class. -

Re: 2 Questions about Romanian
Sat, April 28, 2007 - 10:36 AMWow,
My better half and I just started the Pimsleur Romanian course for our trip to Romania in the summer!
I like it very much, except they shipped us the CDs without the accompanying books and we had to
wait quite a while to get them.
But, I'm enjoying it very much!
