Sook

Hi Everyone,
Here in Nova Scotia we use the word sook quite frequently... It's a verb and a noun, you can be a sook or you can sook. Rhymes with book, look. Like the term sooky-baby. A crybaby, pouting...
People in New Mexico don't know it, people in Colorado don't know it, people in the Britain don't know it, people in Ontario don't know it. I'm sure some people might know it, but the people I've asked have never heard of it...
Just wondering where you're from and if you've ever heard it?
A little project of mine, the dictionary I looked at said that it is an Australian word, so why is it so common on the east coast of Canada???

great thread, Coyote! regional slang is a fascinating topic in itself. as for "sook"...i've never heard of it. perhaps you have a lot of Australian expats (&/or descendents of same) in Nova Scotia? pure speculation on my part.

Yeah, I was wondering if it was brought over here by people fleeing the UK - or being exiled over here. Would be similar to the prisonners taking it down to Australia... But why did it stop here? You'd think they would have taken the word with them when they spread out across North America. Nova Scotia and New York seem to have been the main ports for immigration back in the day... I need to start randomly sending messages asking people in NY if they have it down there....

Update: I just spoke to a man from Australia who works with me, he knows all about the word sook - and all the way it can be used. So far, I've only found the word used in Nova Scotia, and now Australia (I guess I better find out where he's from exactly).
        My search continues!
        :)

Etymology: 19c: perhaps from earlier suck(-calf) a hand-reared calf, influenced by the Scots pronunciation of suck.

since it's originally a scots word, it would make sense to see it in Nova Scotia and in Aussi land, where large numbers of Scots settled.

I heard it when I was living in Nova Scotia, and was flummoxed by it's meaning,as were all my American friends to whom I would frequently send lists of strange Canadianisms.

I'm with Kip on the origins, as I did notice a lot of similarities between the slangs of my aussie and cape breton friends.
