Hey, All:
I am a 40-something who works on a college campus. I hang with the geeks and nerds to keep up with various nomenclature. It's AMAZING! Taking the anthropologist-linguist point of view, I've only recently discovered the meanings of
LOL (laughing out loud)
ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing)
LMAO (laughing my ass off)
PWNED - okay, this requires some explanation. Originally, the word was "owned". As in I "owned" this or that, meaning I am the master, the guru. BUT, there was a typo and now it is PWNED, pronounced /po:wnd/.
Amazing, verdad?

Re: Internet glosses and their meaning to you
Fri, May 12, 2006 - 10:33 AMHilarious!
Maybe this will replace shorthand, though it's a hell of a lot faster to type, "You're welcome." (at least for me).

Re: Internet glosses and their meaning to you
Fri, May 12, 2006 - 11:39 AMthat's why we have "ur wlcm" you save a whole 8 keystrokes! That's about 2 seconds right there. Don't 4get such time savers as: "u want 2 g 2 g str8 2 the movies or stop @ krystal's pad 1st? oh, nm, my house is on fire, gtg. ttyl"

Re: Internet glosses and their meaning to you
Tue, May 16, 2006 - 9:28 PMDifficulty of "translation" is apparently the whole point of l33t. That's what separates the 31337 (elite) from the |>w/\/2|> (pwnzd).
Note the identical rendering of 'p' and 'd'. -
-
Re: Internet glosses and their meaning to you
Wed, May 17, 2006 - 8:39 AMYep. I'm just starting to get this. I got a "l33t" message a while ago.
"Show off your 1337ness and make all the other h@x0rs jealous."
Seems this has too much standard English. Hey, I guess l33tlish is happening!
